Why did the band split in the first place?
A few reasons I suppose, the main one being that we seemed to be banging our heads against a wall in this country. Just as we started up a number of bands from the revival period were splitting, as was the mod movement, and the people we were talking to went all 60s and purist, "real mods only wear this label" and "where's your Hammond organ?". I got fucked off with it in the end, I'd been a mod for twelve years, I didn't need people telling me my clothes and music weren't old enough. Modernism is a way of life, dressing with style, listening to bands who are like minded, it's certainly not a 60s re-enactment society. Mods in the 60s wore contemporary clothes and listened to contemporary music as we did in the early eighties. I think by 1990 everyone had lost the plot.

What made you reform the band?
When we split I thought that was it, the chance to do what I wanted had gone, I'm in my thirties now so I'd just get on and live my life, but with all these bands reforming recently and getting just as much a following as they used to have, I thought why not? After 10 years more experience of life what sort of songs would I write, how would I interpret the older tunes, could the band get recognition now after rejection the last time? So a lot of it was curiosity but also there was that frustration that the band had been cut short last time.

You seem pretty bitter.
No, not really, you've just given me the chance to get a few things off my chest after 10 years, I'm sure there are a lot more people out there who feel the same as I do.

How are things going to differ this time?
Well, I've got less hair for a start and unfortunately we lost Steve on bass. We lost contact a few years back and we couldn't track him down so we've got a new bass player. I also think after 10 years of different musical influences, some of the old tunes may be slightly re-worked, we'll have to wait and see.

When can people expect to see you playing?
It's a bit hard to say at the moment. We've only just started rehearsing and I know Powerpop are keen for us to record some of the new songs, so it should be in a few months.

Are the new songs different in style to the older one?
No, not really, although what they are about may be different. Musically they're as punchy as the old stuff, I don't think I could do a 'Jam to Style Council' turn around. It's what is in me, I like listening to and playing music with balls.

Being a Jam fan, what is your favourite Jam track?
All of them! but if I had to pick any in particular I'd say "I got by in time". As a tune it just gets me every time and I'd also pick "News of the world". Production wise, this song has so much power in it that it still sends shivers down my back when I hear it now and if I could get a Fleet Street song to sound as powerful I'd be more than happy.

What films do you like watching?
I like anti-war films such as "Cross of iron" and "Saving private Ryan", films that shock you into seeing the futility of it all and of course my favourite, the thought provoking "Twelve angry men". I'm sure there are many bigots who have watched this film and then thought what fucking twats they are.

Are you happy now you've reformed the band?
Let's wait and see till we've played for the first time again. If we get cheered when we've finished I'll be happy, if we get blanked I won't be.
